No, it’s not perfect, but it sure as hell is relatable and it’s a BIG OLE step forward in my opinion. We have bigger fish to fry than the primetime show of a WoC who is, by and large, doing it right. We’re really coming after HER because she’s too heteronormative? She’s pushing boundaries in every other damn way. Come after the 560,334 white shows that have the platform, audience, and leeway to do better for stuff like that, not the woman who is already dealing with the unsubtle racism of critics who would probably think that she had written the perfect lead character—if she were blonde.
Critique it all you want for what it coulda shoulda woulda been, but what it is is a show that puts a Desi woman in the spotlight and is dealing with her culture, religion, body politics, etc. in a realistic (if not idyllic) way. If we force every minority character to be a perfect representation of minorities, we’re feeding into unrealistic and unattainable white bullshit about who and what we are. We do everyone a disservice when we allow our social experience as minority women to make us believe that all minority women in the spotlight should be perfect or be shunned.
Do your thing, Mindy.

Wayne Brady calls “bullshit” on Bill Maher.
I would be happy if anyone beat Maher’s ass in public, but especially so if it were Wayne Brady
and more context from the article:
Maher first explained his desire for Obama to be a “real black president” who “lifts up his shirt so they can see the gun in his pants” during a monologue in 2010. Subsequently, Maher referred to Obama as “your Wayne Brady,” a characterization that put into question the African-American credentials of both Obama and Brady.
“I’ve respected him as a comedian, and what he does on HBO is great,” Brady told Hill. “But when he starts to drag me in, to use me as the cultural linchpin of his not-black-enough argument, that’s bullshit.”
This delights me. Bill Maher is, in fact, full of shit.
Also, Marc Lamont Hill needs to get on with his fine instigating ass.

“So my amazing daughter, Emma, turned 5 last month, and I had been searching everywhere for new-creative inspiration for her 5yr pictures. I noticed quite a pattern of so many young girls dressing up as beautiful Disney Princesses, no matter where I looked 95% of the “ideas” were the “How to’s” of how to dress your little girl like a Disney Princess…We chose 5 women (five amazing and strong women), as it was her 5th birthday but there are thousands of unbelievable women (and girls) who have beat the odds and fought (and still fight) for their equal rights all over the world”
